Two Accounts of Scope Availability and Semantic Underspecification

چکیده
We propose a formal system for representing the available readings of sentences displaying quan-tifier scope ambiguity, in which partial scopes may be expressed. We show that using a theory of scope availability based upon the function-argument structure of a sentence allows a deter-ministic, polynomial time test for the availability of a reading, while solving the same problem within theories based on the well-formedness of sentences in the meaning language has been shown to be NP-hard.

Scope Underspecification with Tree Descriptions: Theory and Practice
In this paper, we outline the results of the CHORUS project on the topic of semantic underspecification, along two major lines of research: We review a series of solvers for dominance constraints and dominance graphs, two closely related underspecification formalisms developed in CHORUS, and present research results concerned with semantic construction and the development of wide-coverage under...
متن کاملA Uniform Approach to Underspecification and Parallelism
We propose a unified framework in which to treat semantic underspecification and parallelism phenomena in discourse. The framework employs a constraint language that can express equality and subtree relations between finite trees. In addition, our constraint language can express the equality up-to relation over trees which captures parallelism between them. The constraints are solved by context...
متن کاملMeaning⇔Text theory and Dependency Tree Semantics: an account of Underspecification
This paper presents an approach to semantic interpretation for MTT that accounts for ambiguities of quantifier scoping. Dependency Tree Semantics (DTS) is described as a target formalism that introduces in the SemS a mechanism for dealing with quantifiers. DTS is based on underspecification, i.e. all ambiguous interpretations of a quantified sentence are represented in a single structure, where...
متن کاملEfficient Solving and Exploration of Scope Ambiguities
We present the currently most efficient solver for scope underspecification; it also converts between different underspecification formalisms and counts readings. Our tool makes the practical use of large-scale grammars with (underspecified) semantic output more feasible, and can be used in grammar debugging.
